Under the umbrella of the school’s motto ‘From Reality We Gain Understanding’ the school believes in a child centred approach to learning with an emphasis on direct experiences forming a basis for subsequent learning. A developmental approach is taken towards children’s progress, where learning is a continuum and children build upon their skills. The Seaford community works in partnership to assist the total development of children within the whole school framework. The school provides a strong basis for the development of Literacy and Numeracy and, at the same time, develops the child as a whole person, with attention to emotional, social and physical development. We encourage the development of positive self esteem, the desire to learn and the ability to work as a team. Our beliefs as a school are based on the core values of Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Excellence. Seaford Primary School, established in 1914, is the original Victorian Education Department School in the Seaford area. The school abuts the Seaford/Edithvale Wetlands which have recently acquired international conservation/protection status as a part of the RAMSAR Convention and therefore has significance for Seaford Primary School both geographically and historically. The school is very close walking distance to the Seaford Beach and is situated on Port Phillip Bay. The proximity of the bay and the wetlands has enhanced our area of Seaford as an attractive option for families to live. Seaford Primary Schools link to the Seaford Community is strong and historically based. The school has a strong association with the Seaford RSL and are also members of the Edithvale/Seaford Wetlands Association, The Kananook Creek Reserve Association and the Seaford Foreshore Committee organisation, the Seaford Special Events Group and the Seaford Village Precinct Development group and the Seaford Life-Saving Club. The school buildings are a mix of red brick, metal Bristol and wooden structures. We have an Art/Craft Centre, a Library Resource Centre, a Resource Room and a Multi Purpose School Hall. The school operates a Special Assistance Unit (SAU) - Language. The school also is home to a Student Support Services Centre that acts as a base for Student Services Staff servicing schools in the Frankston District. The school has large, well maintained grounds which include a large oval, two adventure playgrounds, extensive asphalt, large sheltered areas, plentiful treed and garden areas and a semi enclosed paved quiet area for passive recreational purposes. Enrolment trends indicate a student population of 170. With the support of specialist programs including Physical Education, Library, The Arts and Indonesian, a comprehensive and diverse curriculum is provided through the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The Library Resource Centre is fully computerised and networked with all areas having Internet access. The schools eLearning plan goals are being met and future planning in place. All Classrooms utilise a variety of eLearning apparatus. Staff have access to notebook, staff resource centre and administration computers. Through development of the schools eLearning plan, computers are a vital part in Seaford Primary Schools educational program. Student curriculum and student well-being needs are well catered for by a team of dedicated, experienced, highly qualified staff who actively engage in ongoing professional development. The staff is well supported by an energetic, effective band of parents. The school provides information to the school community designed to increase awareness and understanding of Seaford’s Curriculum and Student Well-Being programs. Underpinning student well being is a strong Social Competencies program encompassing Restorative practices and the You Can Do It Program. Reading intervention programs such as Early Intervention – Additional Assistance (based on the Reading Recovery model) and Bridging the Gap are established components of curriculum delivery. The Early Years program is implemented across Prep 1, 2, 3 & 4 by class teachers and literacy aides. Teaching and Learning methods and the pedagogy espoused in the Early Years model and Middle Years extend into Years 5 and 6. The Middle Years focus on real life learning and in our partnership with the Seaford Carrum Cluster of schools through the Innovations and Excellence Program (Years 5 to 9) ensures that our approach to the curriculum actively engages students in the learning. Our Literacy and Numeracy levels of attainment are high and in most areas, currently above the state mean as is our school attendance. Seaford Primary School has an exemplary Program for Students with Disabilities. The program is coordinated by an Integration Teacher, and implemented by teachers working in conjunction with Integration aides. The needs of the children are largely categorised as language disordered, learning disability and physical disability. The needs of the language disordered students are exceptionally well catered for in a best practice SAU - Language Unit. The Officer-In-Charge of the Unit is ably supported by classroom teachers and provides high quality positive learning experiences that lead to improved levels of learning acquisition, language literacy skills, self esteem and social communication. The priorities of Teaching and Learning and the development of Social Competencies are supported by the values inherent in the school goals. The school is committed to Restorative Practices as an approach to student well-being and student behaviour management, we receive many enquiries and visits from other schools for our excellent practice in this area. Seaford Primary School is committed to maximising the educational opportunities for all students with staff professional development playing a vital role in achieving continuous improvement for all.
