WELCOME – WOMINJEKA:

A very warm welcome back to all of our families and a welcome especially to new families joining us in 2021.

BUILDING WORKS

As I am sure you have seen for yourself the school is looking amazing with our works nearing completion. We have now taken possession of the admin building so when you come to the school your first place of call if you need to see Erica, Robyn or myself will be the old brick building – which is only old on the outside – the inside is very modern. Most of the landscaping is finished with a little more planting still to do. The building works are now concentrated on the multi-purpose room, the STEM Room and the canteen, with completion expected on the last day of term – April 1st. An order for furniture has been placed and is expected to be delivered during the next school holidays so we are well on track to start using these new facilities as from day 1, term 2.

PLAYGROUND AND LANDSCAPING:

However when this work is done, our work is not – we still have a little under $500,000 to spend this year on playgrounds and additional landscaping. I have been in contact with the VSBA who have advised that they are currently appointing project managers for all VSBA led projects and once this is complete- sometime in March- discussions will commence at the school level to plan for what we would like to prioritise in our project. I will keep you fully updated with this.

SCHOOL COUNCIL:

With a new year comes a new school council. The school council is an integral part of any Victorian Government School. The role of the school council is to ensure that the governance of the school is in accordance with all department and government requirements. It establishes the direction of the school and sets goals and targets of the school through the School Strategic Plan and the Annual Implementation Plan. School Council is responsible for things such as:

Finance including budgets; Fund Raising; Canteen; Uniform; Buildings and Grounds; School Lease Agreements; Hiring of facilities ….. and much more

The school council at Seaford Primary School comprises both parent and staff representation. We have 8 parent reps, 4 staff reps and the principal who is the executive officer of the council. Parent and staff reps are filled through an election process and elected members sit for two years. Every year, half of the council retire, and these positions are then filled through an election process.  We also have the ability to have up to two community members who are co-opted by the school council to provide additional expertise when particular projects are being undertaken at the school. Currently we do not have any community members of school council.

School council meets once each month and must meet a minimum of eight times throughout the year. Meetings go for a maximum of two hours and the day and time of these meetings is determined at the first meeting of each new council so that it is convenient for all members.

Towards the end of this month I will be calling for nominations for the four vacant parent positions for the next two years. Eligible parents can nominate themselves or another eligible parent for one of these positions. Please give this your serious consideration. Being a member of the school council not only gives you an opportunity to be involved in the governance of the school, but it will provide you with a greater understanding of the way in which your school operates as well as getting to know and work with other parents and staff at the school.

Should you need more information of the role of the school councillor and the commitment expected of councillors, please feel free to contact me.
